Family photographs and archive albums

Archive essentials

Simple principles for organising and protecting a personal collection.

01

Photographs

Sort prints by period, record names carefully and avoid permanent markings on original photographs.

02

Documents

Store letters and certificates flat, away from sunlight, moisture and materials that may transfer colour.

03

Digital copies

Keep high-quality master scans, descriptive file names and at least two independent backup copies.

A careful workflow

Preservation works best when every step is documented.

Review Identify fragile and important items.
Organise Group materials by year, event or family branch.
Digitise Create clear master copies without altering originals.
Preserve Use safe storage and maintain separate backups.

Quick archive check

Mark the preservation steps already completed.

Why keep two independent copies?

A second copy protects the collection when a drive fails, a device is lost or files are accidentally changed. Periodically open several files from each backup to confirm that they remain readable.
